Hanna Glawari has inherited a large fortune, and the government of the tiny state of Pontevedro is anxious for her to keep her money in the country. Danilo, who spends his time at Maxims night club, is thus dispatched to propose marriage to her for the Fatherland. But it is not so simple. It takes a lot of waltzing and singing before the right couples find one another.
