Two tales of the relationship between an ageing man and a young woman, and destructive jealousy. Puccini's Il tabarro is a realistic story set on a riverboat. In I pagliacci, the action is set in the world of theatre, where everything is possible.
What these two operas have in common is the desperate act of a husband jealous of his young wife's new love. Based on the same premise, these two popular classics present completely different approaches to the story. Il tabarro is operatic realism at its finest, while in I pagliacci the line between what is real and what is theatre is blurred.
