Erich Korngold's raging music merges with Kasper Holten's talented direction and Camilla Nylund's heartfelt performance to produce one of the Finnish National Opera's most celebrated productions.
Paul is obsessed with the memory of his recently deceased wife Marie. He meets Marietta, who reminds him of his love and the dead city is forever altered. Later earning notoriety as a film score composer, Erich Korngold's rich romantic music is powerful 20th century opera. Camilla Nylund repeats her much-feted captivating performance as Marietta. Tickets to the previous run sold out quickly, but Die tote Stadt now returns with its top-notch vocalists for eight performances.
"International level luxury show." -Helsingin Sanomat
"I regard Die tote Stadt as one of the greatest operas of the first quarter of the 20th century and the Finnish National Opera's production makes it stand out as a true masterpiece, scenically and musically." - Seen and Heard International
"The real difficulty in staging the opera is the personality of Paul. One often sees him teetering on the brink of madness portrayed in clichéd fashion in operas, writhing in their agony. That is not very interesting, and it is difficult to identify with. Therefore we chose to show Paul's reality and his feelings. We see the story from his point of view, and that is why we see his dead wife on stage too. We see Marie, and we see into Paul's mind. There is no need for the singer playing Paul to act crazy - we can see his dream, and we can see it being shattered."
